The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford provides families with convenient, safe neighborhood-based locations. We operate three full-service clubs in Hartford as well as four public school-based sites in Hartford and Bloomfield.

Unit Director, Peter Lewis

Peter Lewis joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford movement in 2006 as a Youth Development Professional. Over the last 11 years he fortunately has had the opportunity to assist in the mentoring of our young people, facilitate programs and cultivate relationships. He has also completed organizational trainings, such as the Youth Development Professionals Academy (YDPA) and Middle Management Institute (MMI). Through much tutelage, he’s learned many key concepts. Peter believes in consistency, and stands by his motto “firm but fair”. Throughout his tenure, he has mastered how to build positive relationships with youth. Peter is currently the Unit Director of the Asylum Hill Boys & Girls Club. His role is to ensure that programs are being ran effectively, maintain the success of partnerships and collaborations, while managing part time staff.

Unit Director, Sophie Reid

Sophie Reid is the Unit Director for the Southwest Boys & Girls Club. Mrs. Reid joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford as a teen member in 1997, even being named Youth of the Year during her time as a Club member. Growing up in the City of Hartford, she has a passion to build connections among youth and families that will keep the community strong for a lifetime. She has an active, outgoing presence with a great sense of humility, cheerful personality and is always open to feedback. Mrs. Reid has been with BGCH for many years and has held several positions. She is proud to serve the youth, teens and families at our Southwest Club!

Unit Director, Ashley Stewart

Ashley Stewart joined the Boys & Girls Club movement in April 2012. Within no time at all, the Asylum Hill Clubhouse began to feel like home. There, Ashley will forever have memories of the staff, parents, and the many special young people who have influenced her life just as much as she has influenced theirs. Ashley began her career with BGCH as a Youth Development Professional, and now occupies the role of Unit Director at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford at Trinity College. As a returning resident of Hartford, Ashley takes pride in her connectedness to her community. Ashley currently is pursuing her Bachelors degree in Child & Youth Development at Charter Oak State College. Living, serving and working in the Hartford community is merely the seed being planted for her life’s work. Her outreach extends far beyond the community in her backyard. Ashley is a facilitator for The Discovery Center, a Hartford based non-profit, serving youth and educators across Connecticut. She also sits on the board of Haymarket Peoples Fund, a foundation that allocates funding to organizations in New England, engaging in social justice and anti-racism work.

Unit Director,  Levar Mitchel

Levar Mitchell is the Bloomfield School Director for Boys & Girls Club of Hartford. Started his career at the Boys & Girls Club in 2012, Levar has served youth through several capacities as a Sports, Fitness and Recreation Director at Southwest Unit & Program Director at Trinity College Unit. He continues to impact the youth throughout the Hartford community.

Prior to joining the Boys & Girls Club of Hartford team, Levar Mitchell worked for the University of Connecticut (UCONN) Upward Bound program as a lead tutor/counselor and UCONN Husky Sport as a Teacher and afterschool program coordinator. Some of his responsibilities were: planning, implementing, and supervising fun outdoor & indoor group programs that physically & mentally engage Club members and help them develop new friendships, social norms, learn sportsmanship as well as team building and communication skills.

Mr. Mitchell graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports and Leisure Management with a minor in Sociology. Mr. Mitchell also studied abroad in Ghana, West Africa to studied Sustainable Development at the University of Cape Coast for over a month. Mr. Mitchell recently graduated from the University of Connecticut with his Masters in social work with a concentration in Administration.

Outside of work, Levar is actively involved in his church of Seedtime & Harvest Ministries of Bloomfield, CT. He is also an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated.

Unit Director, Joe Bumpers

Joe Bumpers is the Community School Director for Boys & Girls Club of Hartford. Having started his career at the Boys & Girls Club in 2005, Joe has served youth through several capacities and continues to impact the youth of the Asylum Hill neighborhood on a daily basis.

Prior to joining the Boys & Girls Club of Hartford team, Joe worked for Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration where he was the Program Coordinator of Mystic Aquarium’s Education Center in Hartford for seven years. There he oversaw all program operations including: staff management, facility maintenance marketing, teaching educational classes, maintaining exhibits, etc.

Joe has taken courses at Central Connecticut State University and plans to obtain his degree in the near future. Having worked in youth agencies for more than 15 years Joe has gained extensive experience, knowledge, and understanding of children that makes him a valuable asset to the Boys & Girls Club of Hartford.
